About Greek Doric Columns
Greek Doric columns were among the earliest columns developed. For a given column diameter or height, they are slightly more slender than columns of the Tuscan order (for proper proportions, the column diameter at its widest point should measure 1/8 of the column height). Unlike all other columns of the classical orders of architecture, the Greek Doric column employs no base. Instead, the shaft of the column extends all the way to the floor on which the column rests. Greek Doric capitals are used to ornate the Greek Doric column.
The fluted style of the Greek Doric column is also more commonly employed. Additionally, the Greek Doric column differs from standard fluted columns in both number and style of the flutes. In number, Greek Doric columns have 20 flutes whereas standard fluted columns have 24 flutes. In style, the flutes come to sharp corners called arris, as opposed to the slightly convex, smooth fillets of other styles of fluted columns.
