Rope Twist Column Installation Guide

IMPORTANT NOTICE: If you are not going to be installing the columns immediately, place something underneath the ends so that one end is higher than the other. This allows air to pass beneath them, preventing moisture from damaging the paint primer on the columns.

  • Step 1: The capital, base, and rope-twist shaft are positioned and leveled using basic carpentry. The base is cut so that it can twist up and down. To make sure that it will align correctly once the rope-twist is fixed to its position, the shaft and capital must be pressed up against the soffit completely; see Figure 1 below. Align the capital to its final position. Now twist the base down to the substrate/floor and twist the base and shaft to the correct alignment; see Figures 2a and 2b.
  • Step 2: The base can now be twisted out of the way, and Simpson Strong-Tie “L” brackets can be used to attach the shaft to the substrate and the capital to the soffit.
  • Step 3: Fill any gaps with adhesive to create a weather-tight assembly. The fiberglass base twists down over the bottom of the shaft and is also adhered to the substrate. The small 1/8” gap between the top of the base and the column shaft is caulked.
